Kotoka International Airport in Accra has a reputation problem. Ask anyone who has visited Ghana in the past decade and you will hear some version of the same story: long queues at immigration, Terminal 3 feeling overwhelmed, the walk between terminals feeling poorly organised, heat and waiting and confusion at the baggage carousel.

That experience is being addressed — systematically, and starting now. In April 2026, President John Dramani Mahama cut the sod on a major new infrastructure project that will reshape what it feels like to arrive in Ghana. Here is the full picture.

What is being built — and when

April 27, 2026

New concourse groundbreaking. President Mahama cut the sod on a connector hall linking Terminals 2 and 3. The facility will include 5 passenger boarding bridges, bi-directional travelators, 5 escalators and elevators, 1 VIP lounge, 4 business lounges, and 4 new retail and duty-free outlets.

July 2026 (expected)

Terminal 2 upgrade complete. The $18 million renovation will convert Terminal 2 into a dual-purpose terminal handling both domestic and international flights — relieving pressure on the currently congested Terminal 3.

2026–2027

Broader master plan underway. Additional elements include a new control tower, parking structure, hotel complex, and expanded duty-free facilities. A new national airline has been announced by President Mahama, timeline to be confirmed.

Regional airports

Sunyani, Bolgatanga, and Wa airports have also been earmarked for upgrades as part of the broader national aviation plan — improving internal connectivity beyond Accra.

What this means for your trip right now, in mid-2026

The concourse construction is underway, which means parts of the airport will be active construction zones. Expect some disruption to the usual terminal flow over the coming months. Here is the practical read:

The $100 Airport Infrastructure Charge

The AIC was introduced in May 2026 and applies to all international passengers arriving at Kotoka International Airport. It is in addition to your flight ticket price. Budget $100 USD per person for this charge when planning your total trip cost. Check with your airline about whether it is included in your ticket or payable separately on arrival.

The best US cities to fly direct from — June 2026

As of June 2026, the only non-stop flights from the US to Accra operate on the following routes:

From all other US cities, you will connect through Atlanta, New York, or a European hub (London Heathrow, Amsterdam, or Paris CDG). The European-hub routing adds 4–8 hours to total travel time and is generally less economical.

"People underestimate the fatigue factor. You land in Accra after 11 hours from Atlanta. The airport is loud and warm and unfamiliar. Give yourself one full day in Accra before going anywhere meaningful." — OurRoots Research Cohort, November 2025 Survey (n=303)

The long view: Ghana is investing in arrival

The airport expansion is one part of a broader message Ghana is sending to the world — and specifically to the diaspora. The country is investing in making arrival feel like arrival. The concourse connector, the Terminal 2 upgrade, the plans for a national airline: these are not abstract infrastructure projects. They are the physical expression of a country that wants the diaspora to come, to stay, and to return.

For anyone planning their first trip to Ghana in 2026 or 2027, the infrastructure disruption is minor compared to the direction of travel. The airport you will land at in 2027 will be materially better than the one that existed in 2024. The one in 2029 will be better still.
