This is the privacy policy for OurRoots Journal and The Walk heritage preparation membership. It explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. If you have any questions, email support@ourroots.africa.
Who we are
OurRoots Journal and The Walk are operated by 3Men Pty Ltd (ABN 83 678 873 839), trading as OurRoots.Africa. A venture of Digital Assets Africa Ltd.
Address: 81–83 Campbell Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, Australia

What we collect
- Site analytics (Google Analytics 4): We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the Journal. GA4 records pages visited, approximate location (country/city), device type, browser, and how you arrived at our site. It does not collect your name, email, or payment details. We have enabled IP anonymisation — your full IP address is never stored. GA4 data is processed by Google LLC on servers which may be located outside Australia; Google's privacy policy applies to this processing: policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
- Email address: If you subscribe to the email letter or create a Walk account, we store your email address. We use it only to send you content you've requested and membership-related communications. We do not sell it.
- Walk account data: If you subscribe to The Walk, we collect your name and email to create your account. We do not store your payment card details — these are handled entirely by Stripe.
- Payment data (Stripe): Payments for The Walk are processed by Stripe, Inc. We receive confirmation of successful payment and your Stripe Customer ID, but never your card number, CVV, or full card details. Stripe's privacy policy: stripe.com/privacy.
- Travel DNA Quiz™: When you take the Travel DNA Quiz at traveldnaquiz.com, we collect and store the following on our server: the first name you enter (or "anonymous" if you leave it blank), your Heritage Readiness Type (e.g. Heritage Seeker), your dimension scores across five readiness categories, the date and time you completed the quiz, your anonymised IP address, and the page you arrived from. This data is used solely to understand how the OurRoots community is progressing on their heritage journey. It is never sold or shared with third parties. A 90-day retake restriction is also stored in your browser's local storage; clearing browser data removes the local lock but does not delete server records. To request deletion of your quiz record, email support@ourroots.africa.
- Other free tool data: The other free interactive tools (Sankofa Card, Twi Memory Game, Heritage Readiness Score, Budget Calculator) store results in your browser's local storage only. We do not receive them. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Third-party services
We use the following third-party services that may process data about you:
- Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) — website usage analytics. Privacy policy · Opt out
- Stripe, Inc. — payment processing. Privacy policy
- Google Fonts (Google LLC) — typeface delivery via CDN. Google may log your IP when fonts are loaded. Privacy policy
We do not use Facebook Pixel, TikTok Pixel, advertising networks, or any AI training data pipelines.
Our commitments
- We will never sell your data.
- We will never share your heritage survey responses or DNA context with advertisers, third parties, or AI training providers.
- We will never publish your name or story without your explicit written permission.
- We will offer data export and account deletion on request. Email support@ourroots.africa to exercise either right.
Cookies & tracking
The Journal uses cookies in two ways:
- Strictly necessary cookies: A small number of first-party cookies remember your tool progress and theme preferences. These do not track you across other websites.
- Google Analytics 4 cookies: GA4 sets cookies (including
_ga,_ga_XXXXXXXX) to distinguish unique visitors and track session data. These are analytics cookies, not advertising cookies. GA4 does not use your data to serve you ads on other sites. Cookie data is retained for 26 months, after which it is automatically deleted by Google.
We do not run advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or cross-site trackers beyond GA4. If you disable cookies entirely, the tools will still work — they will simply forget your score between sessions, and GA4 will not collect analytics data about your visit.
Your rights
You have the right at any time to:
- Ask us what we have on you (we will respond within 14 days).
- Have your email removed from the waitlist (one click; instructions in every email).
- Have any data we hold deleted permanently.
Email support@ourroots.africa with the word "delete" in the subject line and we will action it.
Data security
We use industry-standard security — encryption in transit (HTTPS), encryption at rest for the waitlist database, and access controls so that only the founding team can see the waitlist. We do not store more than we need to. No system is 100% secure; we will notify affected users within 72 hours of any breach, per Australian regulation.
Children
This site is intended for readers 16 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16. The Cape Coast Castle article and certain other content addresses the trauma of the slave trade in adult terms; parental discretion is advised for younger readers.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy substantively before the preparation platform launches, and from time to time after. We will email everyone on the waitlist at least 30 days before any material change takes effect.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, and complies with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
