Apply too early and it expires. The Ghana e-Visa rules for a December trip.

Applying for a Ghana e-Visa online before a December 2026 heritage trip

The flights were booked in August, the way careful people book December flights. The visa felt like the next sensible thing to tick off, so it went in the same week. Nobody mentioned that a Ghana e-Visa has a shelf life, and that one issued in mid-August stops being usable in mid-November, a fortnight before the plane leaves.

If you are travelling to Ghana this December on a passport that needs a Ghana e-Visa, here is the short answer. Apply now or in November, not before. The Ghana e-Visa is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued, it allows one entry only, and the Ghana Immigration Service's own guidance tells applicants not to apply well in advance of a trip. An e-Visa issued in mid-October 2026 can be used to enter Ghana up to around 12 January 2027, which covers the whole of the December season.

Everything below comes from the official Ghana eVisa applicant guide, published by the Ghana Immigration Service with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as it read on 14 October 2026. Where the guide does not answer a question, we say so rather than guess.

When should you apply for a Ghana e-Visa for December?

For a December 2026 arrival, the right time to apply is from now through November. The Ghana Immigration Service states that a single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days from its date of issue, and that if you do not enter Ghana within that period the e-Visa expires and a new application is required. The same section advises applicants to time the application so their travel falls inside the 90 days, "rather than applying well in advance of a trip."

The arithmetic is simple once you see it. Count back 90 days from the day you land. If you arrive on 1 December, the earliest useful issue date is around 2 September. If you arrive on 20 December, it is around 21 September. If you arrive on 3 January, the last day of the Ghana Tourism Authority's December in GH season, which runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, it is around 5 October.

So anyone applying today, in mid-October, is inside the window for every December arrival. Anyone who applied in July or August for a mid-December or Christmas arrival should check the issue date on their e-Visa now, because it may expire before they fly. The fix is a fresh application and a fresh fee, and it is far better to find that out in October than at check-in.

How late is too late is a judgement call, and this part is ours rather than the government's. Standard processing is stated as 96 hours, but the guide also says processing times are estimates, and a request for more documents pauses the clock. December is the busiest month of Ghana's travel year. We would not leave the application closer than three weeks before departure, and we would not pay for express processing to rescue a deadline you could have avoided.

What does a Ghana e-Visa cost in 2026?

A Ghana e-Visa costs US$260 for standard processing within 96 hours, US$338 for priority processing within 48 hours, and US$442 for express processing within 5 hours, according to the Ghana eVisa portal's visa information page. The documents are the same for all three tiers. You are paying only for speed.

The fee is the same whatever passport you hold. The applicant guide is explicit that the e-Visa fee "is not based on nationality." Fees are generally non-refundable, so a refused application, or one you make too early and let expire, is money you do not get back.

Two payment details from the guide are worth knowing before you start. Do not try to pay more than three times; after three failed attempts, wait 24 to 48 hours. And if money leaves your account but the application still shows as unpaid, do not pay again. Contact support with the transaction evidence.

Can you leave Ghana and come back on the same e-Visa?

No. The Ghana Immigration Service states that Ghana "currently issues single-entry eVisas only." Once you have entered Ghana, that e-Visa has been used.

This matters more in December than at any other time of year, because the season is regional. Plenty of people fly into Accra, cross to Lagos for a wedding or to Lomé for a weekend, and fly back to Accra for New Year. Under the current rules, coming back into Ghana is a new entry, and a new entry needs a new e-Visa. Budget for a second application and a second fee if your plans take you out of the country and back again.

What the guide does not say is how the system treats a second application made while you are already inside Ghana, or how soon before re-entry it should be made. If a side trip is part of your plan, write to the e-Visa support desk before you book it, at support.evisa@immigration.gov.gh, and keep their answer.

When we reported the e-Visa launch in May, we listed multiple-entry prices that had been circulating at the time. The official guide now says plainly that only single-entry e-Visas are being issued, so treat any multiple-entry figure you see elsewhere with caution.

What do you need if you are staying with family in Ghana?

If you are staying with a Ghanaian relative or friend rather than in a hotel, the guide requires three things from your host: a formal signed host or invitation letter, a copy of their Ghana Card or passport biodata page, and their full residential address in Ghana. If your host is not Ghanaian but lives in Ghana, you need their signed letter, their passport biodata page, a valid Ghana Residence Permit and their address.

Every signed letter must be submitted with the identification of the person who signed it. This is the detail most likely to trip up a diaspora traveller, because it depends on someone else in another time zone finding, scanning and sending documents. Ask your host now, not the week before you apply.

Whoever you stay with, the guide says your accommodation evidence must cover the full length of your stay. A hotel booking for the first five nights and a vague plan for the rest is not enough. If you are splitting a long December stay between a hotel, a guesthouse in Cape Coast and a cousin's house in Kumasi, your application needs to account for every night.

For a tourist e-Visa you also need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave Ghana, with at least three blank pages, a confirmed return or onward ticket, a recent passport photograph, and proof of sufficient funds, such as a bank statement covering the last three months.

What happens if something goes wrong after you submit?

You cannot edit or withdraw a Ghana e-Visa application once it is submitted. If you notice a mistake, such as a mistyped passport number or names in the wrong order, the guide says not to submit a new application or pay again. Contact support with your reference number, and support can open a correction form for the details concerned.

If an officer needs more from you, you will receive a Request for Information through your applicant dashboard. The current response period is three days, and processing is paused until you answer. If you do not respond in time, the application is assessed on what it already holds. In December, with family logistics and work deadlines piling up, three days passes quickly. Watch your email and the dashboard, including the spam folder.

If your application is refused, the reason is sent by email and you may appeal once. A senior officer, not the one who made the original decision, decides the appeal. A successful appeal is not an approval; it sends the application back for another assessment.

Finally, an e-Visa is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry. The guide is clear that final admission is decided at the border, and that the officer there sets how long you may stay, up to 60 days. Carry a printed copy of the e-Visa, the passport you applied with, your accommodation evidence and your Yellow Fever certificate.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate to enter Ghana?

Yes. The Ghana Immigration Service states that a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry and may be checked at the port of entry. Our 2026 vaccinations checklist for Ghana covers the timing.

I hold an African passport as well as a US one. Do I need the e-Visa?

The guide states that all African passport holders receive an Electronic Travel Authorisation rather than an e-Visa, and that ECOWAS nationals are visa-free. Which passport you travel on decides which route applies, so use the eligibility checker on the official portal with the passport you will actually present at the border.

Is there a cheaper Ghana visa through the embassy?

The portal describes itself as the official route for tourist and business visas, and the applicant guide tells travellers to rely on it and on current government publications rather than third-party sources. If you have been quoted a lower figure by an agent or an older website, check it against the portal before you pay anyone.

There is a reason to get this settled early that has nothing to do with the rules. A first trip to Ghana is rarely only a holiday. For many people it is the trip they have been circling for years, and the weeks before it fill up with things that matter more than a form: which relatives to call, what to bring for them, whether to go to Cape Coast in the first week or the last. A visa that is still pending in the final fortnight takes up room that belongs to those questions. Settle it in October or November and it stops being something you carry onto the plane.

None of this is difficult. It is just unforgiving of timing, and December is the month when timing is hardest to control. Apply inside the 90 days, get your host's documents early, and if you are leaving Ghana and coming back, plan for a second e-Visa.

For the wider context, our report on the e-Visa launch in May 2026 explains how the system replaced embassy applications, and our Detty December guide covers what the season itself is like.

This is general information only, not legal advice. Visa requirements change. Verify with the Ghana Immigration Service through the official e-Visa portal, or with a qualified immigration lawyer, before making decisions.
